Error 680-There is no dialtone...

  1. Make sure the phone line is hooked up correctly between the modem and the wall jack. (Often, the phone cord is plugged into the ethernet jack--> Ask, "is there only one plug where the phone cord goes into the back of the computer?"  There should be two.  Ask, "does the plug fit perfectly, or is there some room around the sides?")
  2. Remove any surge protectors or splitters on the line.
  3. Plug a phone into the wall jack that the computer uses and verify that it does in fact have a dial tone. If not, refer user to the telco.
  4. Make sure the dialing type is selected correctly as either tone or pulse.
  5. Add 3 commas (,,,) infront of the access number. (This sometimes alleviates poor dialtone dtection by the modem..)
  6. Try the x0 init string. (Remember to note that this is done as it will affect future error messages like 678)
  7. Refer to manufacturer or the telco.

Note: Despite protestations of many, many users, there is really no way that this could ever be caused by dial-up software.  999 times out of 1000, the modem is plugged in incorrectly.
